Vaunted L.I. Radio Personality
- Joe Rock -
to MC Second Annual Awards Gala

The Shea Theater at the Selden Campus of Suffolk Community College will certainly be rocking in a few days as renowned radio disc jockey Joe Rock of WBAB radio takes the stage and control of the podium as the Master of Ceremonies for the Second Annual Students Theater Arts Recognition Scholarship Awards, or STARS, hosted by the Greater Port Jefferson Northern Brookhaven Arts Council [GPJNB].

The announcement of Joe Rock as the STARS Awards MC is just another in a continuing series of major announcements in anticipation of the second ever awards gala on June 7, in the Town of Brookhaven.

Joe Rock, and avid singer and musician, has a long and storied history in front and behind the radio mic. Along with being one of the most recognized radio personalities and voices in radio, Joe Rock is a rock n’ roll historian who has worked for Progressive station WEHM, Station B103 and Long Island’s #1 Rock Station 102.3 WBAB. In 2009 Rock was elected Vice Chairman of The Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

“It is an honor and a privilege to have the great Joe Rock serve as the voice of the STARS Awards. Our nominees from across Brookhaven are thrilled to have such a special and multi-talented personality like Joe Rock as an integral part of our STARS Awards,” said Lori Anne Casdia, Executive Director of the STARS Awards, who kicked off the high school theater scholarship program on Rock’s weekend radio broadcast on WBAB. “When we began this journey to recognize and honor high school theater students and performances throughout Brookhaven, Joe Rock was one of the first celebrities who jumped right in and helped make the STARS a reality.”

In addition, Rock is a singer and songwriter, as well as being a guitar, mandolin and harmonica player. He is a recording artist doing Rock, Punk, Folk and Blues music. In addition, Rock is an avid record, CD and guitar collector and devotes much of his time and too much of his money to those endeavors.

“We are exited to have Joe Rock front and center for the STARS Awards. The ‘Voice of the STARS’ will have a whole new meaning with Joe Rock’s brand of comedy, insight and distinction,” said Allan Varela.

The STARS Awards is a scholarship recognition program where the winners will receive a scholarship from The STARS Awards, a matching scholarship from Stony Brook University, and Dowling College, and a beautiful glass etched STARS Award. High Schools participate in the STARS Award at no cost to the districts. Local school district performances put up by local high schools are well represented in this year’s slate of nominees. The following school districts earned nominations in 25 categories:

· Longwood Schools – 6 nominations [First Year Participant];
· Middle Country School District (Newfield & Centereach)– 12 nominations;
· Mt. Sinai School District – 4 nominations;
· Port Jefferson School District – 12 nominations;
· Rocky Point School District – 15 nominations;
· Sachem School District – 11 nominations [First Year Participant)
· Ward Melville School District – 19 nominations
· William Floyd School District - 6 Nominations (First Year Participant)
All participating school districts are also eligible for the Innovation in Theatre Education Award, which recognizes schools that go beyond the regular theatre program of classes and supports activities that nurture theatre arts education.

This season alone, more than 25 performances were judged from 11 high schools in the Town of Brookhaven included in the program. Along with the presentation of STARS in 25 of categories, the red carpet, black tie awards gala on June 7, 2009 at the SHEA THEATRE at SCCC, Ammerman Campus in Selden, will feature six live performances from theater productions judged this past season.]
